Church and Van Slyke Construction Project Information
SOUTH LAKESHORE BRIDGE OPEN FOR AUTOMOBILE TRAFFIC,
The South Lakeshore Drive bridge in the Village of Fontana at the Abbey Harbor was opened for automobile traffic and pedestrians on Thursday evening, July 3, 2014 following an emergency repair project completed by Scherrer Construction Company, Inc., Burlington, under the direction of Collins Engineers, Inc., Milwaukee. The channel under the bridge is also open again for boaters coming in and out of the Abbey Harbor.
The bridge is not open for truck or trailer traffic, so it is still being detoured south on Highway 67 to County Highway B, to Indian Hills Road and back to South Lakeshore Drive.
Collins Engineers, Inc., Milwaukee and the Wisconsin DOT ruled June 26, 2014 that the bridge was unsafe for motor vehicle traffic and should be immediately closed pending a repair or replacement project. The repair project was constructed by Scherrer in about four days, with some staging work commencing on Sunday, June 29, 2014.
During the repair project construction, there were scheduled breaks to allow the Abbey channel to be opened for short intervals to allow boats in and out of the marina.
Pedestrians are able to walk over the repaired bridge, but the sidewalks under the bridge will not be opened until a replacement project is completed.
